SPINE CARE

Spine, as we all known, is known as BACKBONE in layman’s term, but in actual, it forms a major integral part of our axial skeletal system. It serves various functions. Out of these, following are the major ones:

  • Neuroprotective

  • Flexibility

  • Stability

  • Aesthetic

Normal structure of spine

There are total 33 vertebrae which form our spinal skeleton. The division of these 33 vertebrae is as follows – 7 Cervical, 12 Dorsal/Thoracic , 5 Lumbar, 5 Sacral,4 Coccyx (tailbone).

In between, two vertebral bodies, there are intervertebral discs. The neural formen is located in the middle of the vertebra through which spinal cord passes which branches out nerve roots on either sides to supply our extremities or body as per the region.

Dynamic Stabilizers ( Para- spinal Muscles )– All muscles situated along side spine column help in controlled motion of vertebral skeleton, such that body movements become easy and free.

As a result, The human spine is a unique, highly advanced functional unit, which is designed not only to take loads, but also to permit movements in all directions while protecting important neural structures.

Spine issues

The world is divided into three groups of people

  1. Those who are having back pain

  2. Those who have had back pain

  3. Those who will have back pain

80% Of people go through back pain at some point in their lifetime. Most common issues which people come across related with spine are –

  1. Slipped disc (Prolapsed intervertebral disc)

  2. Lumbar canal stenosis

  3. Cervical Spondylotic myelopathy

  4. Tandem Stenosis (Stenosis at two or more regions at a time)

  5. Infections – Tuberculosis or Pyogenic

  6. Fractures – Age related osteoporotic or pathological

  7. Trauma – Fracture or fracture –dislocation

  8. Tumor – Benign or Malignant

  9. Deformity – Scoliosis, Kyphosis, Adult degenerative
